My grandparents lived at Redcliffe so we used to go down there for holidays. (Redcliffe was where I bought my first camera, saved up from pocket money at age 8). My Dad did not have a car so we walked many places on our holidays. We loved fishing and I remember setting out from the house in the evening to walk the one or so kilometres to go fish on the jetty on an afternoon similar to this. Sue and I revisted it recently on a stormy, very windy afternoon. The camera on the tripod was shaking so we had to seek protection behind a shelter. We had met up in the dark, about 5 am for a sunrise shoot at Mooloolaba on Queensland Sunshine Coast. The waves were pumping, always full of surprises, as the sun quickly rose, (as it does in Queensland) above the horizon. This shot was taken not long after sunrise, as I moved around the slippery rocks looking for another composition. I arrived while it was still dark waiting for the morning to brake. I felt I was in a precarious place. I think that watching each wave form and how they crash into the shore line is like watching a flame dancing and flickering, not one flame is the same and that is so with waves. Both have a relaxing mesmerising effect. When shooting sunrise on rocks with an incoming tide you don’t have much time to think. You frame up your composition, adjust your camera setting and click. But there is more to it than that - what you are doing is watching each wave, how it is forming, what it is doing and where it is landing.
